When was the last time you did something for the first time? As part of an open invitation to all South Australians, this question is presented to encourage visits to public libraries and take part in the inaugural LibrariesSA Firstival, a festival of first experiences.
Firstival presents a diverse program, available at www.firstival.com.au, featuring opportunities for connection, discussion, and thrilling moments of discovery. Throughout the month of July, Firstival will unfold across the state’s public libraries, offering more than 350 events designed to captivate people of all ages, backgrounds, and interests. It is worth noting that many of the Firstival events are free, making them more accessible, particularly during the school holidays.
Libraries have always been known as places of exploration, where stories come alive, and knowledge is sought. But they are much more than that—they are the heart of our communities. Libraries are places to come together and connect, to play and unleash creativity. They offer opportunities for learning and personal growth, creating an enriching environment for all.
The Honourable Peter Malinauskas MP Premier of South Australia, Minister for the Arts Andrea Michaels MP, and Chair of Libraries Board of South Australia Bruce Linn AM recognise the vital role that public libraries play in nurturing a love for lifelong learning. They encourage all South Australians to embrace this opportunity and try something for the first time at their local library.
Participants will have an opportunity to immerse themselves in a virtual reality experience that transports them to a whole new country or capture precious memories by creating their own digital scrapbook. They can delve into the fascinating world of DNA extraction, have a blast making seed bombs, or the chance to build and even smash their very own Lego city. These are just a taste of the amazing activities individuals and families can experience throughout South Australia during Firstival. At a local level, Council’s Library Service has incorporated its regular early literacy, STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics), and social inclusion activities as part of the program with the aim of encouraging new participants.
So, when was the last time you did something for the first time? Don’t miss out on the incredible experiences available through Firstival. Grab the chance to connect, learn, and create lasting memories at a South Australian public library.
